about the artist

Gwen Florea has been interested in art since she was a child in grammar school. Gwen graduated in Fine Arts at UCLA . She then toured the world to further her art education. In the Orient she was delighted to discover Letter Art. For many years Gwen played with this art form, creating her own very distinctive style. Gwen is the only Letter Artist in the country that uses all sorts of jungle animals as well as ocean creatures for her designs, deliberately avoiding an Oriental look to her creations. Gwen has been a Letter Artist for 16 years. She spent many years on Maui working as an artist. Then she moved to Las Vegas where she has been a very successful artist for the last several years.

Gwen has had a very checkered career. Among her many varied careers she spent many years working at Mattel Toys as a toy designer. Strangely enough she did not work in the art department but in the recording studio/acoustical laboratory creating talking and sound toys. She has published a book entitled BARBIE® TALKS! An unauthorized exposé of the first talking Barbie® Doll.

In BARBIE® TALKS! you will discover how Gwen became the voice of the first talking Barbie® Doll. It has some hilarious and poignant stories about working at the largest toy company in the world during it’s golden days of the sixties and early seventies.
